Astronaut Hall of Fame

: The commander of the 100th space shuttle mission and a space walker who flew on STS-100 will be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame on May 14 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. Entering the Astronaut Hall of Fame as the 15th class of space shuttle veterans since 2001, Brian Duffy and Scott Parazynski bring the total honorees to 93.

Moon mission's living monuments

: Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard and Ed Mitchell landed on the moon 45 years ago this week, while Stu Roosa remained in orbit. Whereas Shepard may have provided the flight's most memorable moment, hitting a golf ball for "miles and miles," it was Roosa who planted the (tree) seeds for what are still Apollo's living monuments four and a half decades later.

Choose the moon

: A retired astronaut finds a rocket-like ride at the wheel of his son's car in Audi's new ad to air during the Super Bowl on Sunday (Feb. 7). The spot, which is set to David Bowie's "Starman," features a fictional Apollo astronaut first seen surrounded by memorabilia from the golden age of space exploration. The commercial, titled "The Commander," was first teased by Audi last month with the help of a real Apollo commander, Gene Cernan.

Edgar Mitchell (1930-2016)

: Edgar Mitchell, the sixth astronaut to walk on the moon, died Thursday (Feb. 4), on the eve of the 45 year anniversary of his landing. The lunar module pilot on board the Apollo 14 mission, Mitchell and Alan Shepard explored the Fra Mauro lunar highlands for nine hours over the course of two excursions. The first and only astronaut to throw a javelin on the moon, Mitchell conducted ESP experiments on the way back to Earth.

Apollo 11 writing on the wall

: For 40 years they remained hidden below the seats inside the Apollo 11 command module, "Columbia." Now, the Smithsonian's effort to 3D scan the capsule has revealed them for the first time. Handwritten inscriptions, including a calendar, navigational notations and improvised labels have been found alongside lockers and on the walls of the mission's spaceship.

A Beautiful Planet

: Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence will narrate the new IMAX 3D space movie "A Beautiful Planet," coming to large-format theaters on April 29. The film, which features footage shot by astronauts on the International Space Station, is directed by Toni Myers, the filmmaker behind "Hubble 3D," "Space Station 3D" and "Blue Planet." Focused on the changing Earth, "A Beautiful Planet" was produced by IMAX in cooperation with NASA.

The VSS Unity

: Virgin Galactic rolled out the second of its SpaceShipTwo spaceplanes on Friday (Feb. 19) and christened the ship the 'VSS Unity.' Founder Richard Branson's one-year-old granddaughter and famed physicist Stephen Hawking helped in the vehicle's introduction. Four years in the making, the VSS Unity follows Virgin Galactic's first ship, Enterprise, which was lost in a 2014 accident.

Moon mail

: The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is now offering "The Moon," a postage stamp featuring Earth's only natural satellite. Issued at the $1.20 price, this Global Forever stamp can be used to mail one-ounce letters to any nation to which first-class international service is available. "The Moon" comes ten stamps to a sheet with a selvage of a forest's tree line silhouetted against the evening sky.

'Last Man on the Moon'

: When Mark Craig was young, he pieced together a model kit of a Gemini astronaut on a spacewalk. Little did he know that decades later he'd put together a full-size recreation of his boyhood toy for a documentary about one of those astronauts. Craig's movie, which retells the "epic tale" of Gene Cernan, "The Last Man on the Moon," opens in U.S. theaters on Friday (Feb. 26).

Year in space, sans souvenir

: In five days, Scott Kelly will return home to the Earth after nearly a year aboard the International Space Station. Kelly, who together with cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko left the planet last March, is set to land Tuesday (March 1). Packing for his trip home, Kelly said he that doesn't have a personal memento of his 340 days in space, but is returning souvenirs for others.

Houston, we've a premiere

: The red carpet at Thursday's (Feb. 25) Houston premiere of "The Last Man on the Moon," a documentary about Apollo moonwalker Gene Cernan, was not star-studded, but lined with astronauts. A dozen men and women who have flown in space came out to see the film, which opened in theaters and on iTunes on Friday. "I do not think you get this type of turnout anywhere but here in Houston," said astronaut Tony Antonelli.

Don Williams, 1942-2016

: A two-time space shuttle astronaut, Don Williams died at 74 on Tuesday (Feb. 23). Chosen with NASA's first class of shuttle candidates in 1978, Williams flew as pilot of Discovery's STS-51D mission in 1985 and as the commander of Atlantis' STS-34 mission in 1989, the latter deploying the Galileo probe to Jupiter.

One giant leap (day)

: Astronaut Scott Kelly transferred command of the space station on Monday (Feb. 29), adding another milestone to the list of space events that took place on a leap day. From the birth of an astronaut to the landing of a Soyuz crew, space history has continued to be made on Feb. 29, even if only in four year intervals.
