This charred heat shield segment was removed from the Charlie Brown following its Apollo 10 mission to the Moon and 24,790 mph reentry. The Command Module's aft heat shield was made from brazed stainless steel honeycomb filled with phenolic epoxy resin as an ablative material; it varied in thickness from 0.7 to 2.7 inches (1.8 to 6.9 cm).
