First manned Apollo mission
This section of Apollo 7 ablative heat shield was cut from one of several ring sections that surrounded the docking collar of the command module. The material dissipated the heat by vaporizing during atmospheric reentry, protecting the area of the spacecraft from high temperature extremes. Certified as authentic by Apollo 7 LMP Walt Cunningham.
