This four by three by two inch block of Apollo command module heatshield was made by Avco Specialty Materials (now a division of Textron Corp), as NASA's contractor for the spacecraft's thermal protection system. Made from brazed stainless fiberglas honeycomb filled with phenolic epoxy resin, the Avcoat ablative varied in thickness from 0.7 to 2.7 inches.
