— Krispy Kreme is offering a sweet way to celebrate NASA's Perseverance rover arriving at Mars — a new, limited edition doughnut landing at shops for just one day.

Krispy Kreme's new Mars Doughnut, which is made to look like the Red Planet, will be available at participating stores in the U.S. and Canada on Thursday (Feb. 18), the same day that NASA's next six-wheeled explorer is set to touchdown in Jezero Crater on Mars.

"The landing of Perseverance on Mars will be an epic and important achievement," said Dave Skena, Krispy Kreme's chief marketing officer, in a statement. "So, we're celebrating the best way we know how: with an amazing new doughnut discovery right here on Earth."

The Mars Doughnut is a chocolate "Kreme-filled" doughnut dipped in caramel icing with a "red planet swirl" and sprinkled with chocolate cookie crumbs.

"The design of Krispy Kreme's Mars Doughnut ... is surpassed only by its deliciousness," the company said.

If successful, Perseverance will be NASA's fifth rover to reach Mars' surface and the first to search for and cache signs of life for a future return to Earth. The mission is also carrying "Ingenuity," the first helicopter designed to take flight on another planet, and three fingernail-sized silicon chips etched with the names of the almost 11 million people who signed up with NASA to send them to Mars.

"To acknowledge these special space 'travelers,' Krispy Kreme will give each one a free Mars Doughnut on Feb. 18," the company said in a release. "Just show your NASA-issued Mars 2020 Perseverance 'boarding pass' to redeem."

The Mars Doughnut will also be offered for sale, including as part of "The Mars Dozen," a mix of six Krispy Kreme Original Glazed and six Mars doughnuts.

The Perseverance promo is not the first time that Krispy Kreme has introduced a new doughnut in celebration of a NASA event. In 2019, the company timed the debut of its "Original Filled" doughnuts with the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing. Krispy Kreme doughnuts were sold at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for those who came out to witness the Apollo 11 astronauts launch for the moon in July 1969.
