A new year for space memorabilia

December 31, 1999 — From a collector's perspective, 1999 was a pretty good year. Interest in our hobby was at a high, anniversaries gave us reason to celebrate, and auctions raised (temporarily) the value of our collections. A new book brought us closer to an original astronaut, online auction sites made acquiring new items easier and the ultimate memorabilia, the last lost space capsule, was found and restored.

And oh, let's not forget, a certain website made its debut to report all these events and bring collectors worldwide together.

So, as we look forward into the next and final year of the 20th century, space memorabilia collectors can anticipate another busy year. Although no one knows what all of 2000 will hold, here are some of the events we can look forward to:
  • January 3 - the long-awaited "Off the Planet: Surviving Five Perilous Months Aboard the Space Station Mir" by Space Shuttle and Mir astronaut Jerry Linenger is released.

  • January - the opening of the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum new, three-story gift shop, including an area for memorabilia and museum-quality pieces.

  • February - German space memorabilia dealer Spaceflori makes history, launching the personal possessions of collectors aboard the (planned) final flight to the Russian Space Station Mir.

  • April - Former Apollo Flight Director Eugene Kranz releases his autobiography "Failure Is Not an Option: Mission Control from Mercury to Apollo 13 and Beyond."

  • April - 30th anniversary of Apollo 13 (the mission, not the movie).

  • May 6-7 - Superior Galleries holds its 14th bi-annual space memorabilia auction in Beverly Hills, California (they will host a second sale in the fall).

  • May - Gemini and Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin releases his next book, a thriller/mystery (fiction) novel; a nationwide (possibly international) book signing tour follows.

  • Fall of 2000 - New York auction house Christie's East hosts its second annual "Space Exploration" sale.
