LEGO Ideas

: Two SpaceX-inspired sets and a second try at the space station have made it into the second LEGO Ideas Review of the year. Kevin Hehmeyer's Falcon Heavy rocket and the SpaceX "Ultimate Collection" posted by Matthew Nolan and Valerie Roche, along with Christoph Ruge's revised International Space Station will be reviewed by LEGO designers for possible production and sale.

SLS ML enters VAB

: For the first time since the end of NASA's Apollo program, a mobile launch tower has been rolled into the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The tower-topped platform completed a fit check at Launch Pad 39B and then entered the voluminous rocket hangar, where it will undergo checks in support of the Space Launch System (SLS). The mobile launcher will be inside the VAB for the next seven months.

Apollo at 50

: The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum has announced plans to help lead the national celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. In July 2019, the museum will host a five-day public commemoration of the Apollo 11 mission, including placing Neil Armstrong's spacesuit on display for the first time in 13 years. The Smithsonian has also scheduled events leading up to the anniversary, to recognize the Apollo missions that made it possible for astronauts to walk on the moon.

End of era

: After three decades of launches, the Delta II rocket has reached its final flight. Set to loft NASA's ICESat-2 satellite, the last mission for the Delta II will not only conclude the rocket's 30 years of service to NASA, the U.S. military and commercial customers, but also mark the end of the first pioneering era of U.S. rocketry. If this launch goes to plan, it will be the 100th consecutive success out of the Delta II's 155 total missions over the past 30 years.

Delta Blue

: United Launch Alliance's Delta II rocket made its final flight on Saturday (Sept. 15), lifting off with NASA's ICESat-2 satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base in southern California. The launch capped 30 years, 155 missions and marked the end of "Delta Blue." The Delta II's distinctive hue began as a primer hidden beneath a coat of paint, but came to represent the team behind its success.

Delta II display

: Just under an hour after the final liftoff of a Delta II rocket, United Launch Alliance (ULA) revealed what would become of its last surviving example. The Delta II will "live among the giants" as part of the Rocket Garden at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida so that the public can share in its heritage.

To the moon, with artists!

SpaceX will fly a Japanese billionaire and six to eight artists of his choosing on a trip to the moon in 2023. A fashion retailer and avid art collector, Yusaku Maezawa intends for the trip to result in new masterpieces that will "inspire the dreamer within all of us." The private moon mission will both help fund and launch on SpaceX's BFR ("Big Falcon Rocket") under development.

Dream Chaser die-cast

: A space plane now being built to service the International Space Station is on final approach to store shelves. Mattel is set to release a die-cast toy version of Sierra Nevada's Dream Chaser spacecraft as part of its Matchbox Sky Busters line. Modeled after the crew-configured Dream Chaser, the toy also resembles the test article Sierra Nevada used to develop its cargo craft.

Personal space

: A new exhibit featuring the mementos carried by 11 astronauts into orbit is now open at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City. "Personal Space" showcases Scott Altman's pocket watch, the St. Christopher medal worn by Mike Good and the Snoopy doll flown by Mike Massimino, among an eclectic collection of objects representing the personal side of spaceflight.

Destination Moon

: The Apollo 11 command module "Columbia" has landed in Pittsburgh. The centerpiece of the Smithsonian's touring exhibition "Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission," the spacecraft is set to debut along with 20 other historic artifacts from the first moon landing at the Senator John Heinz History Center on Saturday (Sept. 28). The exhibit also features items displaying Pittsburgh's many contributions to Apollo, from steel to switches.
